Should We Prosecute Young Children?

The Magistrates’ Association decided last week to reject a call for the age of criminal responsibility to go back to 14 years of age. The current age is 10 years. Our Head of Criminal Law, Andrew Parker, was involved in the notorious ‘Sutton Burglary Posse’ case in the 90’s that lead led to the change in the law from 14 to 10. We firmly believe that children of pubescent years should not be liable to prosecution.

Facebook Boasting Burglar

A teenager, Adam Dutton of Leeds, boasted about his loot he gained from breaking into a house. The police used the photos posted on Facebook as evidence against him. He was sentenced to three years in a young offender institution.

Class A drugs are being bought on a website and distributed to homes across the UK using the Royal Mail. Drugs are bought online using untraceable digital currency. Users say it is easier and safer to buy online then to buy from a dealer. The Royal Mail said it never knowingly allows illegal substances to be delivered by post.

Sex, drugs & panting visits

So 34 year old Lee Chapman escapes from Hollesley Bay Colony Prison, commits 6 burglaries and gets 2 more years at Ipswich Crown Court. Not so unusual perhaps? But the reason given in his mitigation is that there was far too much sex, drugs and use of mobiles in this chilled out prison! So unsettled was Lee at the sight of 3 unofficial female visitors outside his cell, he just shinned down a drainpipe before waiting for a bus to escape back into East Anglian normality.

Our staff have visited this prison many times without noticing any unusual conduct, apart from the time when the staff kindly looked after two canines waiting at the gate for the return of their legal master.
