Secret Justice Campaign

Human rights groups are starting a campaign against Government proposals to allow evidence involving national security to be heard behind closed court doors, under the ‘Secret Justice’ Bill, also known as the 'Justice and Security Bill. The House of Lords are due to review the proposed legislation on the 19th november.Cases that could potentially cause embarrassment to the authorities should not be held behind closed doors, according to these campaigners. Police Database Mug Shots

Millions of peoples’ photographs are being put on the police national police database, in an apparent attempt to stop criminals moving around the country without detection. The fear is  of a breach of civil liberties, with the pictures of people who have not committed any offences on the database. So, merely being arrested might lead you to being one of the millions currently stored. Holding a current Driving Licence also makes one eligible for storage.

Jail for Facebook Posts

An 18-year-old made depraved sexual comments about 5-year-old April Jones on Facebook. He made these offensive remarks on the day a man was charged for April’s murder. Sam Busby pleaded guilty to the charge of sending an indecent and offensive message brought under the 2003 Communications Act. He was given a six week jail term, suspended for 18 months at Worcester Magistrates Court.

 A man has been charged with possession of class A drugs after putting cocaine in children’s ‘trick or treat’ bags. The case is being dealt with before Oldham Magistrates Court.

Indecent Images of Children and Extreme Images

 Nearly 100,000 indecent images were found on an ex-scout leader’s computer. Peter Murphy pleaded guilty to five charges of making and possessing indecent images at Peterborough Crown Court. Mr Murphy had more than 94,000 images of children from babies to teens and extreme images. He received a year imprisonment which was later reduced to 10 months by Judge Enright.
